Trump won’t be able to distance himself from Ukraine — diplomat
Internal and external pressure on Donald Trump will not allow him to ignore Ukraine or abandon support for Kyiv
Dmytro Dovhopolyi, PhD in History, Americanist, and UN staff member (1987–2019), shared his opinions on Espreso TV.
“The situation will definitely not allow Donald Trump to distance himself from Ukraine. He will continue to face domestic pressure, particularly from Congress, where Ukraine has many friends. I would really like to understand what leverage our government and the ambassador in the U.S. have over Trump and overall American support. Have we leaned too far toward the Republican Party? Have we been too critical of the Democrats? This is becoming very important now. With just a year left before the elections, it’s crucial to consolidate bipartisan support for Ukraine,” he added.
According to the diplomat, European leaders also realize that without tools to influence Trump, it will be difficult to keep him committed to supporting Ukraine.
“I also believe external pressure on Trump will increase. It’s not easy for Europeans to deal with a U.S. president who, long before the end of his term, is turning into a lame duck. Europeans understand perfectly well that pressure is needed to move forward. I think this combination of European and domestic pressure will prevent Trump from leaving Ukraine unattended,” he added.
