Trump wants to link rare earth mineral agreement to Ukraine’s commitment to ceasefire
U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly seeking to tie a mineral extraction agreement with Ukraine to the country’s commitment to swiftly implementing a ceasefire
Bloomberg reported the information, citing sources.
Washington has indicated that Trump is willing to finalize the deal—previously stalled due to his dispute with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy—if Kyiv agrees to a “real path toward a truce and negotiations with Moscow.”
These additional conditions are said to be the main reason the agreement has not yet been signed.
Earlier, CBS News reported that Trump was pushing for a “bigger, better deal” with Ukraine regarding rare earth minerals. Sources noted that the current version of the agreement is not final, and some of its terms could still be revised.
Bloomberg also suggests that modifications to the deal could be made in the coming days. However, other sources caution that the U.S. position remains subject to change.
"Ukrainian and US officials may meet in Saudi Arabia, where Zelenskiy is due to travel next week, some of the people said. Other officials cautioned the U.S. position could always shift as Trump often changes his mind," the article says.
Several Trump administration officials have said in recent days that the critical minerals deal is a crucial component of and a step toward the U.S. president’s plan for peace in Ukraine.
