Starmer and Macron to push for stronger support for Ukraine amid Trump presidency fears
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron will discuss boosting military aid for Ukraine to counter potential changes in U.S. policy under President-elect Donald Trump
The Telegraph writes about it.
On Monday, Starmer and Macron are set to meet in Paris to explore strategies for supporting Ukraine, including persuading U.S. President Joe Biden to allow Kyiv to use Storm Shadow missiles deeper into Russian territory. "We are very keen to make sure we can make the most of the time between now and Jan 20," a senior Whitehall source said, referring to Trump’s upcoming inauguration.
Trump, who recently won the U.S. election, has pledged to end the Ukraine conflict quickly, leading to fears he may push Kyiv to accept territorial losses to Russia. Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., hinted at a shift in U.S. policy, saying there’s “no place for war hawks” in the new administration.
The British and French leaders hope Biden will release more financial aid to Ukraine before leaving office. Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, confirmed Biden’s intent to “make the case” that abandoning Ukraine would destabilize Europe.
Starmer’s and Macron’s discussions will also address the risks of Trump’s plans on NATO and the EU, with Starmer working to secure a defense pact with Europe early next year.
