Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said this during a phone call with Celso Amorim, the Brazilian president’s foreign affairs advisor.
“Russia and Ukraine have taken an important step forward by starting negotiations. The settlement process is now at a decisive stage,” he said.
According to Wang Yi, the Friends of Peace platform initiated by Beijing to resolve the war in Ukraine “has made positive efforts to promote dialogue and negotiations.”
“China and Pakistan will continue to maintain communication and work together to advance the Friends of Peace group to further build consensus on a global ceasefire and ending the war in the South, promote talks, and play a role in resolving the political crisis,” the foreign minister stated.
- In late May 2024, China and Brazil outlined a joint position on a political resolution to the “crisis in Ukraine” and expressed support for a Peace Summit with the equal participation of all parties.
- Later, it was revealed that China seeks to create a Friends of Peace platform with other “like-minded countries” to help resolve the “Ukrainian crisis.” Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced that Budapest would join the initiative.
