Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon and Energy Minister Aasland arrive in Kyiv
On Tuesday, May 20, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway arrived in Kyiv for the first time since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion
The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported the information.
"His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon is visiting Kyiv today. This visit shows Norway’s strong and steady support for the Ukrainian government and people. During the trip, the Crown Prince will meet with Ukrainian officials and Norwegian partners, and will also visit projects supported under the Nansen program," the ministry said.
The Crown Prince is accompanied by Norway’s Energy Minister, Terje Aasland.
According to NRK, the Crown Prince and the Energy Minister arrived on an overnight train from Poland and were welcomed by Norwegian Ambassador Helene Sand Andresen and a Ukrainian delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Oleksandr Mishchenko.
The first stop on the visit was the “Angels of Victory” memorial in Moshchun. The Crown Prince laid a wreath there.
“We are very impressed by their resilience and ability to persevere,” he said about the Ukrainian people.
The report notes that this is the first visit to Ukraine by a member of the Norwegian royal family since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. The last official royal visit was in October 2008, when Crown Princess Mette-Marit visited Kyiv.
- The Norwegian government has also extended its agreement with the European Union on the medical evacuation of Ukrainian patients until March 31, 2026. Nearly 13 million euros will be allocated for this.
