Macron to push for peacekeeping mission in Ukraine at EU leaders' summit
French President Emmanuel Macron will discuss deploying a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine at the EU leaders' summit on December 18-19
A European diplomat told Radio Liberty.
As noted, many high-ranking officials say in public that these discussions are premature. In particular, the new top EU diplomat, Kaja Kallas, said so.
However, according to Radio Liberty's source, this discussion is inevitable, given the French president's visit to Poland and the media's focus on peacekeepers, as well as the upcoming inauguration of Donald Trump in the United States and the need to prepare for discussions with him about the war in Ukraine.
Two other diplomats also noted that this topic is being raised precisely to prepare for a conversation with the U.S. president-elect and to ensure the EU's presence in peace talks.
At the same time, they said, the topic of peacekeepers is currently very ‘raw’ and is at the level of an idea.
- On December 7, President Zelenskyy met with Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron. During the meeting, the leaders discussed the situation on the battlefield and a just peace for Ukraine. The President of Ukraine noted that "we all want to end this war as soon as possible and fairly".
