Lithuania backs U.S. plan to supply Patriot systems to Ukraine

Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovilė Šakalienė announced that Lithuania is ready to join the U.S.-led initiative to finance the delivery of Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, using funds from NATO member states

She made the statement following a meeting with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

According to Šakalienė, during the talks she voiced support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to supply American-made weapons to Ukraine under a mechanism fully funded by NATO allies.

"During the meeting with the United States Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth we heard that:

  • The US will continue to remain the axis of transatlantic security, but the contribution of all allies is required to this end. 
  • Lithuania's efforts and contribution to its security are considered exemplary.
  •  There will be no urgent decisions regarding the presence of US forces in our region, and our arguments about the importance of US troops to the security of the region are being".

Lithuania is planning to allocate up to €30 million for the initiative.

  • Lithuania and Estonia have informed the United Nations of their withdrawal from the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Treaty, citing the threat posed by Russia.
