Healthcare reforms bring Ukraine closer to EU - WHO representative Jarno Habicht
Ukraine’s ongoing healthcare reforms are playing a critical role in its path toward European Union membership
Dr. Jarno Habicht, a representative of the World Health Organization in Ukraine, stated this in an interview with Espreso TV.
According to him, transforming Ukraine's healthcare system is essential to ensure high-quality services and align with EU standards.
“We need to invest more in primary care and restructure hospitals to make them modern and accessible,” Dr. Habicht emphasized, highlighting the need for improved infrastructure and quality of care. A key focus is addressing the shortage of healthcare workers, particularly nurses, as Ukraine has half the number per capita compared to EU countries.
The reforms also target public health improvements, such as tobacco control, eliminating trans fats in food, and ensuring proper food labeling. “These practical measures are part of the EU accession process and help people live healthier lives,” he noted.
Dr. Habicht praised Ukraine’s resilience, citing the restoration of healthcare facilities even amidst ongoing war. He affirmed that these efforts are already connecting recovery with the broader goal of EU integration, setting the foundation for a stronger, healthier future.
