G7 summit may offer chance for Lee-Zelenskyy meeting, Seoul prepares
A senior presidential official has confirmed there are no immediate plans for President Lee Jae-myung to speak with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, while signaling potential talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the upcoming G7 summit
In response to media questions, a senior official from the presidential office outlined Seoul’s current position.
When asked whether President Lee is preparing for a phone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, the official stated: “We are assessing the situation comprehensively, taking into account general practice, leaders’ schedules, relations with relevant countries, and the atmosphere in international relations. I cannot say anything more at this time.”
The comments suggest that no immediate plans are in place for direct contact with the Russian leadership. Observers note that recent developments, including Moscow’s growing ties with North Korea, may be a factor in Seoul’s stance.
Regarding a potential meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the G7, the official indicated that preparations are underway should the opportunity arise. “As far as we know, the Ukrainian president’s participation in the G7 summit is possible. In that case, it is quite likely that there will be an opportunity for President Lee Jae-myung to communicate with him… We are preparing for this possibility,” the official said.
On the topic of additional assistance to Ukraine, the administration confirmed that current aid commitments remain in place, with no immediate plans for expanded support. “We will continue to provide the aid packages that have been promised or are already being provided… So far, there are no plans for any new support for Kyiv,” the official noted.
