Friedrich Merz plans first foreign trip as chancellor to Ukraine on May 9
If elected as Germany's next Chancellor, Friedrich Merz intends to make Ukraine the destination of his first official foreign visit
According to WELT, the visit would take place at the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the “Coalition of the Willing” summit on May 9 in Kyiv.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha earlier confirmed that a high-level meeting of the “Coalition of the Willing,” involving heads of state and government, is scheduled for May 9. The summit aims to establish security guarantees for Ukraine, with President Zelenskyy expected to participate.
Politico, citing sources in Berlin and Brussels, reports that preparations are already underway for Merz’s potential visit to Ukraine in early May. Alongside Merz, other top officials—including French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk—are also expected to attend the summit.
Merz's spokesperson declined to comment on the reports.
