European Commission sets 2030 as target date for Ukraine’s EU membership
Correspondent Tetiana Vysotska says that European politicians who support Ukraine claim that it is absolutely realistic for Ukraine to become a member of the EU specifically in 2030
She said this in an interview with Espreso's host Yuriy Fizer.
"In fact, the European Union still expects Ukraine to become its member—not at some indefinite point in the future. An almost official date for Ukraine's accession to the EU has already been set: it is 2030. This is constantly emphasized by both the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the relevant European Commissioner, Marta Kos. They, like all other European politicians who support Ukraine, state that it is absolutely realistic for Ukraine to become a member of the European Union specifically in 2030. Moreover, there are even suggestions that this could happen even earlier," Vysotska emphasized.
The correspondent added that if you look at the term of the current composition of the European Commission, it will be in effect until late autumn 2029. And if the situation develops positively, Ursula von der Leyen and other commissioners may facilitate Ukraine's accession as early as the end of 2029, in order to count this event among their achievements.
"However, despite these ambitious plans, we can currently state that not a single negotiation cluster has yet been opened. And this is despite the fact that Ukraine is already ready to open the Fundamentals cluster. It is also no secret that the opening of this cluster is being blocked by Hungary. For now, it is unclear how the EU, without the political will of Hungary, can bypass its veto and continue to advance Ukraine towards EU membership," Vysotska noted.
- The Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Minister of Justice Olha Stefanishyna, assured that in 2030 Ukraine will be a member of the European Union, adding that this decision has in fact already been made.
