'Each side is going to have to give up something': U.S. Secretary of State Rubio on Russia-Ukraine war
The newly appointed U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, stated that he could not specify a timeline for the end of Russia’s war against Ukraine. However, in his opinion, each side will have to make some concessions
CNN reported this, citing Rubio’s statement immediately after his confirmation as U.S. Secretary of State.
During a conversation with journalists, he said that the U.S. seeks an end to Russia’s war against Ukraine but did not provide specific timelines.
“We want the war to end. That’s pretty clear. You saw the President talked about, he wants to be a president that promotes peace and ends conflicts, and it’ll be complicated as well,” Rubio said. “Those are complicated things. I don’t — couldn’t put a time frame on it, other than to say that anytime you bring an end to a conflict between two sides, neither of whom can achieve their maximum goals, each side is going to have to give up something.”
Rubio stated that he would not comment on negotiations at this time, as such negotiations, at this level and with such high stakes, are best conducted through diplomacy, not public forums. He emphasized that the final decision will remain with Ukraine and Russia.
Additionally, according to the newly appointed Secretary of State, Trump’s priority will be a ceasefire in Ukraine, which is expected to begin almost immediately.
“In fact, some of that’s already begun. You would hope that some of the groundwork has already been laid but it’ll be complex. I mean, it’s a complex conflict and but a bloody one, and it needs to end,” Rubio stated, emphasizing that Russia is the aggressor in this war.
