This was stated in a joint statement by French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who co-chaired a virtual meeting of coalition leaders on Sunday, August 17.

According to the statement, the leaders met on August 17 to discuss support for Ukraine and next steps in peace talks following the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

The leaders “re-emphasised the readiness to deploy a reassurance force once hostilities have ceased, and to help secure Ukraine’s skies and seas and regenerate Ukraine’s armed forces.”

“The Leaders reaffirmed their continued support to Ukraine, and praised President Zelenskyy’s desire for a just and lasting peace as he prepares for further consultations with President Trump in Washington DC,” the statement said.

They also highly valued Trump’s commitment to providing security guarantees to Ukraine.

  • On August 18, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, European Commission President von der Leyen, and other European leaders will meet with U.S. President Trump in Washington, insisting Russia implement a ceasefire first.
  • U.S. President Donald Trump plans to meet first with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy one-on-one on Monday, August 18, 2025, before moving on to an expanded meeting with EU leaders and senior officials from European countries.
