European diplomats told Welt publication about this, referencing sources within Chinese government circles.

In Brussels, opinions are divided. On one hand, involving major Global South countries like China could help recognize the need for deploying foreign troops to monitor peace.

On the other hand, there are concerns that "China primarily wants to spy in Ukraine and in case of conflict, instead of taking a neutral position, will take a clearly pro-Russian stance."

Most EU countries are currently not very inclined to give peacekeeping forces a UN mandate. The exception is Italy, which has been persistently advocating for such a scenario for several months.

  • The day before, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia, China, and the West should become security guarantors for Ukraine.

  • Meanwhile, Zelenskyy believes that China cannot be a security guarantor for Ukraine.
