Andrej Babiš wins Czech election, threatening to block Ukraine's EU path, key arms initiative
The new head of the Czech government will once again be the anti-European politician and pro-Russian billionaire, owner of the Agrofert corporation, Andrej Babiš, who already held this position from 2017-2021
His parliamentary coalition will consist of 108 out of 200 seats in the lower house of the Czech Republic's legislative body, as reported by České Noviny on the night of October 5, 2025.
In contrast, the parties of the current pro-European and pro-Ukrainian right-liberal coalition, led by the SPOLU (Together) bloc, will be able to claim 92 votes in the Chamber of Deputies.
As Babiš stated at a press conference, his ANO party will conduct coalition negotiations with the like-minded anti-immigration fighters from SPD and the Eurosceptic party Motorists for Themselves. At the beginning of the election, ANO had ruled out post-election cooperation with the parties of the current government coalition and the Pirates.
Babiš sees himself as the future prime minister.
The current Czech Prime Minister and leader of the SPOLU coalition, Petr Fiala, congratulated the ANO movement on its election victory and announced his resignation.
On the afternoon of Sunday, October 5, Czech President Petr Pavel is scheduled to meet with Babiš and the leaders of the parties wishing to join the new coalition.
Babiš and his attitude towards Ukraine
During the election campaign, Andrej Babiš advocated for stopping the "shell initiative," through which Ukraine receives artillery ammunition via the Czech Republic. He considers the allocation of the Czech budget, part of which goes to support Ukraine, including the Czech initiative to supply ammunition to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, to be supposedly unfair. According to him, NATO should be organizing this.
"We are helping Ukraine through the European Union. The EU is helping Ukraine, and this is provided for in the next European budget... But if we do not have funds for Czech citizens for medicine and basic social needs, then, of course, we must first take care of them," Babiš said on the evening of October 4 in a comment to Suspilne.
In addition, in his opinion, Ukraine is not ready to join the European Union because, as he says, "the war must end first." However, the ANO leader does not rule out cooperation between Prague and Kyiv.
How the Czechs voted
The following passed the 5% electoral threshold:
The current pro-European and pro-Ukrainian national-democratic coalition SPOLU (Together), which was also joined by liberals from the Mayors and Independents (STAN) party and the Pirate Party:
- SPOLU - 23.34%
- STAN - 11.22%
- Pirates - 8.95%
In total, this is 43.06%.
The opposition populist political force ANO of the pro-Russian billionaire Andrej Babiš - 34.54%.
The anti-immigrant right-wing movement SPD - 7.78%.
The right-wing Eurosceptics Motorists for Themselves AUTO - 6.77%.
In total, these three political forces have 49.09%.
The communist-founded movement Stačilo! (Enough!) will not have any seats, as it only gained 4.30%.
On the eve of the parliamentary elections in the Czech Republic, nearly 300 accounts were exposed for spreading narratives beneficial to the Russian Federation with the aim of influencing the election results.
