
Wave of Russian drone attacks causes casualties across Ukraine, wreck buildings in Kharkiv
On the night and morning of April 23, the Russian army launched Shahed drones at Ukraine, causing damage across several regions. In particular, the attacks injured people in Odesa, Poltava, and the Dnipropetrovsk region
Explosions in Poltava
Volodymyr Kohut, head of the Poltava Regional Military Administration, reported that Russian UAVs attacked the Poltava community.
As of 12:10 a.m., strikes were reported on industrial sites and open areas near residential buildings in the Podilskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts of Poltava. No casualties were reported at that time, and authorities continued to clarify the information.
At 5:54 a.m., the State Emergency Service announced that Russia had carried out a large-scale drone strike on Poltava, injuring three people. The attack damaged civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings, businesses, warehouses, and garages.
One of the drones crashed near a high-rise apartment building, shattering windows and damaging the facade.
Fires broke out at the scene, and firefighters are working to extinguish them. Emergency crews are clearing debris, while State Emergency Service psychologists are providing support to affected residents.
Attack on Kharkiv
At 10:05 p.m., Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov announced that the city was once again under drone attack. A Molniya drone struck the Saltivskyi district, setting a garage on fire. No injuries were reported.
At 1:02 a.m., another explosion rocked Kharkiv, confirming another drone strike. Minutes later, Terekhov reported a second explosion.
At 1:22 a.m., a third explosion was recorded in the city.
Terekhov stated, "All three strikes hit the same area. Fires broke out at the impact sites, and the damage is still being assessed. The threat of more strikes remains."
At 1:40 a.m., a fourth explosion was heard, with Shahed drones continuing to fly into Kharkiv, the mayor added.
At 1:54 a.m., the fifth explosion within an hour was recorded.
By 2:16 a.m., Terekhov reported that six impacts had been recorded, all preliminarily in the Novobavarskyi district. Large fires had broken out, and authorities were checking for other consequences of the night attack.
In the morning, the State Emergency Service confirmed that the attacks had hit civilian targets, causing large fires and destroying buildings. According to early reports, there were no injuries or deaths.
At 7:36 a.m., Terekhov announced another drone strike: a Molniya UAV hit a multi-apartment building in the Industrialnyi district. Fortunately, only the technical floor was damaged, and no casualties had been reported at that time.
Strikes on Odesa
At 10:14 p.m., Odesa Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov warned residents about the threat of incoming drones. By 10:42 p.m., he urged people in the Kyiv district to exercise extra caution. Shortly after, he confirmed explosions in the city.
At 11:23 p.m., Trukhanov announced that the air alert in the Odesa region had been lifted.
Oleh Kiper, head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, confirmed that Russian drones had targeted civilian infrastructure in the suburbs, sparking several fires. Emergency services responded at the scene, and casualty information is still being clarified.
Preliminary reports indicated that the drone attack injured two people, Kiper said, with doctors providing medical assistance.
The State Emergency Service also confirmed two injuries. Civilian infrastructure was hit, including residential buildings and private enterprises that caught fire. Firefighters, volunteers, and the National Guard worked to extinguish the flames, while psychologists provided support to local residents.
Air defense in Kyiv region
At 12:40 a.m., authorities declared an air raid alert in the Kyiv region. By 1:00 a.m., the Kyiv City Military Administration reported air defense activity in the area.
In the morning, officials confirmed that debris from a downed drone had caused a fire at a hotel and restaurant complex in the Brovary district, setting two buildings on fire.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze, and no injuries were reported.
Attack on Dnipropetrovsk region
Overnight, Russian forces attacked the Synelnyky district in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where a drone strike sparked a fire at an agricultural enterprise.
Preliminary reports from the State Emergency Service indicated that two people were injured.
Emergency crews are continuing efforts to deal with the aftermath.
Explosions in Zaporizhzhia
At 12:57 a.m., Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, reported a possible drone attack in the region.
By 2:23 a.m., he announced that air defense systems were active.
