War in Ukraine will last long, Peskov warns Russian elite

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the Russian elite at a holiday dinner in late December that the war against Ukraine will be long

The Guardian reports, citing its own sources, that Peskov was present at a dinner at the apartment of a high-ranking official. Some of the guests present, including representatives of the so-called cultural and political elite, made a toast to the new year, in which they expressed hope for peace and a return to normal life.

"I am guessing you are expecting me to say something," Peskov raised his glass and added: "Things will get much harder. This will take a very, very long time."

Peskov's toast made an unpleasant impression on the guests.

"It was uncomfortable to hear his speech. It was clear that he was warning that the war will stay with us and we should prepare for the long haul," one of the attendees told reporters on condition of anonymity.
