Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that Russia’s current offensive in the country's east may be the last major military push by Russian forces. By next year, he said, it could be possible to start talking about truce

This was reported by Politico.

According to the outlet’s sources, Zelenskyy shared this view during a closed meeting with MPs from the Servant of the People party. He reportedly suggested that Russia’s intensified eastern offensive could be the last large-scale ground assault of the war.

Ukraine will have to endure a tough winter as Russian attacks on the energy sector escalate. However, Zelenskyy told lawmakers he expects a real chance for a ceasefire, though achieving it will be difficult.

Why Zelenskyy is confident

Russia, he said, must face much greater economic and military pressure to be forced toward peace. Russian leader Vladimir Putin needs to realize that negotiations are the only logical outcome, as prolonging the war will drain Russia without bringing it significant gains.

According to Politico, U.S. President Donald Trump is eager to end the war in Ukraine, eyeing a potential Nobel Peace Prize next year. Ukraine plans to leverage this motivation: a high-level Ukrainian delegation is already in Washington discussing support for energy restoration and ways to push Russia toward peace.

President Zelenskyy himself will visit Washington on October 17 for an in-person meeting with Trump. Politico adds that Ukrainian officials believe the situation could now turn in their favor.
