Zelenskyy open to Turkey talks only with Putin, not other Russian officials — President's Office
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will not meet with any Russian representative other than dictator Vladimir Putin in Turkey on May 15
Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the head of the President's Office, stated this on The Breakfast Show.
According to him, lower-level negotiations are just a stalling tactic by Russia.
“No, of course not. That’s not the format,” Podolyak said in response to a question about whether Zelenskyy would meet with other Russian representatives if Putin decides not to attend the talks.
He added that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev are not authorized to make “any decisions, which are part of Putin’s own game.”
For his part, Andriy Yermak, head of the President’s Office, stated that it is impossible to hold negotiations while the Ukrainian people are under constant attack from Russian missiles and drones, so establishing a ceasefire is an important and necessary precondition.
According to him, as of now, the Russians have not given any response regarding Vladimir Putin’s participation in the talks in Turkey.
“I believe that if Vladimir Putin refuses to come to Turkey, it will be the final signal that Russia does not want to end this war, that Russia does not want and is not ready for any negotiations,” Yermak said.
He added that if Russia refuses to negotiate, there should be a strong response from the United States and the entire world—new sanctions and increased military aid to Ukraine.
During a late-night address on May 11, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin claimed he was ready for direct talks with the Ukrainian side in Turkey as early as next week. At the same time, he ignored the idea of a 30-day ceasefire. In response, American leader Donald Trump said he would continue working with both sides and that the coming week would be “big.”
On May 12, the German government stated that if Russia does not agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine by the end of the day, European partners will begin preparing new sanctions. Meanwhile, the Kremlin said that “the language of ultimatums is unacceptable for Russia.”
