US urges Turkey to approve Sweden and Finland's NATO membership bids
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan urges Turkey to ratify Sweden and Finland's NATO membership applications
This was reported by Bloomberg.
"I believe that there is no reason why the ratification of the applications cannot be secured before the summit this summer for both Finland and Sweden," Sullivan said before talks with Turkish president’s special advisor and spokesman Ibrahim Kalin.
Sullivan made the statement as pressure mounts on Turkey and Hungary to approve the expansion of the military alliance.
Officials in Turkey, Sweden and Finland are reportedly trying to resolve the stalemate that has been holding up the expansion of the North Atlantic Alliance since the two Scandinavian countries applied to join in June.
Turkey, the only other country besides Hungary, is seeking to eliminate Swedish groups that Ankara considers terrorists in exchange for its agreement to allow it to join NATO.
