The agreement has been instrumental in preventing grain and food from being transformed into weapons and ensuring that essential food products reach countries in need, as highlighted by the State Department. Patel also stated that this mechanism serves to prevent Russia from weaponizing food.
On April 26, Russia once again impeded the Black Sea grain corridor, resulting in a ship being unable to depart from Ukrainian ports.
The following day, Turkish President Recep Erdogan discussed Ukraine and the grain agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a phone conversation. Erdogan expressed the necessity of continuing the "grain agreement," but Putin expressed concerns about Turkey's proposal.
