US plans to impose 200% tariff on Russian aluminum
The US government plans to impose a 200% tariff on Russian aluminum this week, which could effectively freeze metal imports from Russia to the US
This is reported by Bloomberg.
American authorities have been discussing the tariff introduction for several months, but US President Joe Biden has not yet agreed to take this step. The White House fears that this decision will affect American industry, especially aerospace and automotive industries.
Sources say the US wants to impose a larger tariff due to Russia's alleged dumping in the US aluminum market.
According to Bloomberg, Russia previously accounted for 10% of the total volume of aluminum imports in the US; now it is 3%, and their new step "will effectively freeze the metal import from Russia to the US," Bloomberg writes.
The US authorities considered sanctioning Russian aluminum as early as February 2022, but abandoned this measure.
The publication notes that Russia is the second largest aluminum producer in the world after China. The Russian company Rusal holds nearly 6% of the global aluminum market.
