US imposes new sanctions against Lukashenko's regime

The sanctioned officials are involved in passing the law on the death penalty for persons convicted of so-called "attempted acts of terrorism" - a charge that has been used to suppress the democratic opposition.

In addition, the report says that some of these officials also supported legislation to strip the citizenship of Belarusians living outside the country and accused of "extremism" and confiscate their property for committing "unfriendly actions towards Belarus."

"We will not stand by as this regime continues to harass and repress peaceful protesters, the democratic opposition, journalists, unionists, activists, human rights defenders, and everyday Belarusians," the statement said.

The US Department of State condemned the persecution of opposition activist Svyatlana Tikhanouvskaya, the imprisonment of the founder of the Belarusian Sports Solidarity Foundation Alex Apeikin and athlete Alyaksandra Herasimenia, as well as the detention of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski as a political prisoner.

It is reported that including these sanctions, the State Department has already imposed visa restrictions on 322 persons.
