U.S. boosts military aid to Ukraine in 2023: breakdown of $23 billion support
The United States significantly increased its military assistance to Ukraine in 2023, surpassing the 2022 allocation by $1.8 billion, reaching a total of $23 billion. Here's a glimpse into the key elements of this support
Defense Express writes about it.
In the final arms assistance package of the year, worth $250 million under the Presidential Drawdown (PDA), ammunition for various systems was included. This covered missiles for NASAMS, Stinger MANPADS, TOW ATGMs, HIMARS, and 155- /105-mm ammunition. Components for air defense systems, potentially linked to the FrankenSAM project, were also part of the package.
Summing up the year, the U.S. provided Ukraine with a range of new systems previously unavailable, including VAMPIRE, ATACMS missiles, Abrams tanks, and Bradley infantry fighting vehicles. The total assistance for 2023 includes $1.8 billion more than the previous year.
Specifically, in 2023, the U.S. bolstered Ukraine's air defense with additional NASAMS complexes (4 units), 400 Stinger MANPADS, and doubled the number of air defense radars to 21. The HIMARS system was also increased by one unit, reaching a total of 39 transferred systems.
Regarding artillery, 56 more units of 155-mm artillery systems were provided, totaling 198, along with 2,300 high-precision projectiles. The U.S. also transferred 36 units of 105-mm howitzers, including 620,000 ammunition.
In terms of ammunition, substantial supplies were delivered for Soviet artillery systems, mortars, and small arms. Notably, 31 Abrams tanks, 190 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, and 100 M113 armored personnel carriers were transferred in 2023. Anti-tank capabilities received a boost with the delivery of 1,500 Javelin systems and 44,000 other anti-tank systems.
Moreover, 7,500 TOW ATGMs missiles were provided, and 296 million cartridges were transferred for small arms. While specific quantities are lacking in some categories, the overall support underscores a reinforcement of Ukraine's military capabilities.
