US Speaker Mike Johnson unveils separate bills for Ukraine and Israel
On April 15, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Mike Johnson introduced four bills on aid to Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, and national security priorities
He wrote about this on the X social media.
The bills will be considered this week.
According to the post, Johnson has been discussing a plan for additional national security legislation with his GOP colleagues. Johnson says that this week, congressmen will consider separate bills "with a structured and germane amendment process" to:
- Fund our ally Israel
- Support Ukraine in its war against Russian aggression
- Strengthen our allies in the Indo-Pacific
- Pass additional measures to counter our adversaries and strengthen our national security
According to The Hill, the Johnson plan does not contain border issues. According to Republican Representative Kevin Hearn, this could spark opposition from hardline conservatives who argue that any aid to Ukraine should be coupled with legislation to address the situation on the southern border.
However, Johnson's unveiled plan does not contain provisions on the border. The Hill writes "the strategy prompted an immediate backlash from some conservative lawmakers, who are demanding that any additional aid to Ukraine be accompanied by increased security on the U.S.-Mexico border."
“A lot of conservatives are very upset about how this is going down,” said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. “He’s literally broken his promise.”
