UN to create team to investigate Russian Army's use of sexual violence against Ukrainians - Venediktova
The United Nations will create a team of experts to help Ukraine investigate Russian soldiers' sexual violence during the war
The Ukrainian Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova shared the news.
"The UN will create a team of experts to help Ukraine investigate sexual violence as a weapon of war. We discussed this step of cooperation in The Hague with the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict Pramila Patten," said Venediktova.
According to her, Patten reported that she is ready to organize a group of permanent experts to work in Ukraine in the near future. These experts will assist prosecutors and investigators and cooperate with civil society.
The Prosecutor General reported that most of the victims have not yet contacted the law enforcement officers. And only the creation of safe conditions for those who survived will be able to change this situation.
"The Prosecutor General's Office, in cooperation with Pramila Patten's team, is developing a Strategy for comprehensive protection of victims of sexual violence in the context of armed conflict. It is aimed at ensuring their rehabilitation, preventing re-victimization and creating an effective response mechanism for each case," she added.
