UN names conditions for preventing nuclear disaster at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant
In order to avoid a nuclear disaster at the Zaporizhia NPP, a demilitarized perimeter should be created around it, and any military actions in the direction of the plant or from it should be stopped.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres reported during a meeting of the UN Security Council on Tuesday, September 6.
Any damage, intentional or accidental, caused to the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, or damage to any other nuclear facility in Ukraine, could cause a nuclear disaster that would affect the surrounding region and go beyond it, Guterres believes.
The UN Secretary General called to take actions to avoid this scenario.
"The first step: Russian and Ukrainian forces must undertake not to conduct any military operations in the direction of this facility or from it. Zaporizhzhia NPP should not be an object or a platform for conducting military operations," he said.
The second step Guterres called the agreement on a demilitarized perimeter around the station. In particular, it provides for the obligation of Russian forces to withdraw military personnel and equipment from the perimeter, as well as the obligation of Ukrainian forces not to advance on this perimeter.
