UN General secretary is asking for a meeting with Putin to end the war
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres asks to meet with Vladimir Putin to stop Russia's full-scale war in Ukraine
This was reported by The Hill.
According to preliminary data, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has asked to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow to discuss "urgent steps" to end hostilities in Ukraine.
This is stated in a letter handed to Permanent Mission of Russian Federation in UN. A separate request to Ukrainian mission in UN was made with a request to Secretary General visit Kyiv.
" Secretary-General said that in times of great danger and its consequences, he would like to discuss urgent steps to achieve peace in Ukraine and future of multilateralism on basis of United Nations Charter and international law," said UN spokesman Stefan Dujarric.
He noted that both Ukraine and Russian Federation are founding members of United Nations and have always been strong supporters of United Nations.
Guterres' desire for diplomacy with Putin comes at a time when Russian president has resumed an offensive on eastern Ukraine.
In addition, US and European officials have reportedly described Putin as extremely isolated and cut off from reliable information about his military losses in Ukraine.
Austrian Chancellor Karl Negammer was the last Western leader to meet face to face with Putin in Moscow on April 11. He told media that Russian president "believes he will win the war."
"[Putin] believes that war is necessary to guarantee security of Russian Federation. He does not trust international community, he accuses Ukrainians of genocide in Donbass," Negammer told NBC on Sunday.
"Yes, he is in his world now, but I think he knows what is happening in Ukraine now."
In addition, it is reported that Russia has condemned other UN member states. Most countries voted in General Assembly to condemn Moscow as an instigator of the war and to suspend Russia's participation in Human Rights Council on charges of serious human rights violations.
Russia holds a permanent seat on five-member UN Security Council and has used its veto power to reject attempts to hold it accountable for its invasion of Ukraine.
