Ukrainians support Taiwan
I was born and grew up in Lviv. Here, history and architecture constantly remind us that we are a part of Europe with European values and traditions. The main EU values are democracy, the rule of law, and freedom of speech, Mykola Kniazhytskyi writes.
The School of International Law of Lviv University was so strong that its graduates and professors were among those who did the most for the establishment of democratic principles in the modern world. It is not for nothing that during his last visit, the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, visited the international students of the Franko University of Lviv.
Hersch Lauterpacht (judge of the UN International Court of Justice, author of the concept of human rights and the term "crimes against humanity"), Raphael Lemkin (author of the term "genocide" and the Convention on the Prevention of the Crime of Genocide), Louis B. Son (professor of international law at Harvard University and George Washington University, co-author of the UN Charter) once studied or worked here.
It is an honor for me that in addition to studying journalism at Kyiv University, I have an education in international law at Lviv University.
For many, an important issue now is determining our attitude to the many complex international disputes and conflicts. What is the main thing? Inviolability of borders or the right of nations to self-determination? Who should we support in civil conflicts - supporters of democracy or authoritarianism?
What supporters of Lemkin and Lauterpacht once argued about is still a matter of debate. Is the Bucha massacre a crime against humanity or genocide? The future tribunal will try Russian war criminals for both the first and the second. But legal and political qualifications are important.
I am convinced that right now we must clearly define our future. We have to bring our legislation to EU standards and become the biggest ally of the US in international politics. We must daily demonstrate loyalty to democratic principles both in domestic and foreign policy.
That is why it is a great honor for me, together with my colleagues from the Servant of the People and Voice parties, Oleksandr Merezhko, Yulia Kuzmenko, Bohdan Yaremenko, Yurii Kamelchuk, Yaroslav Yurchyshyn, Mariia Mezentseva, and others, to become a member of the Inter-factional Parliamentary Group for the Support of Friendship, Trade, Economic, Cultural and Humanitarian Cooperation with Taiwan.
The first video conference with Taiwanese parliamentarians took place yesterday.
