Ukrainian convicted of "spying" in Crimea dies in Russian colony - human rights activists
61-year-old Ukrainian Kostiantyn Shyring, who was serving an illegal sentence of 12 years behind bars on charges of "espionage", died in colony No. 5 in the city of Novotroitsk, Orenburg region, Russia
The Crimean Human Rights Group (CHRG) reported the information, citing its own sources in the colony.
According to human rights activists, Kostiantyn Shyring, who was detained by the FSB on April 15, 2020, needed heart surgery, sought medical care, but the operation was never performed. During his transfer to a high-security colony, which lasted 2 months, all his medicines and blood pressure monitor were taken away from him.
"Kostiantyn needed medical care because of his heart disease, but he did not receive it. Failure to provide medical care to our citizens in Russian prisons is not an isolated case, but a systemic practice. The responsibility for his death lies with the colony administration. That is why we need to look for and use all mechanisms to release Ukrainian citizens held by Russia, because the conditions in Russian colonies are a real threat to life," emphasized Olha Skrypnyk, the CHRG head.
There is no official confirmation of the fact of Shyring's death from the colony no. 5.
In March 2021, a senior citizen was sentenced to 12 years for "espionage in favor of Ukraine” in the occupied Crimea.
