Petro Burkovskyi, an analyst at the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation, believes that Ukraine's application to NATO will trigger start a discussion not only about it joining the Alliance, but about the extent to which NATO members are, in reality, ready to protect their allies and respond to Russia's blackmail and aggression

He said this on Espreso TV.

"You know, with this application, we not only clearly showed where we are going. We did a favor to our European allies. They will now look within the Alliance to see who is ready to fight Russia, who is ready to stand side by side against Russian aggression, who is not ready, who, if possible, should be excluded from the Alliance, as well as who does not deserve collective responsibility and collective mutual protection," Petro Burkovskyi said.

The analyst noted that the debate about how much each member of the Alliance is ready to defend its allies is very timely, given the policy of the Russian dictator, who can organize any pretext to start a war.

"That's why I don't think that the Alliance will fall apart. Russia would really like that to happen. I think that Russia will try to submit our application to NATO as a way that Ukraine will now split Europe, and conflicts will begin. In fact, our application allows us all to start a discussion not only about the accession of Ukraine, but about how ready each country is to defend its allies within NATO, and how ready everyone is to fight back against Russian blackmail and Russian aggression. This is a very timely discussion, because by its actions in the Baltic Sea, Russia has shown that it can use even the detonation of underground gas pipelines as a pretext for war. If the Alliance is ready to respond to this decisively, then training and an increase in the contingent will begin, that is, the troops will be put on high combat readiness. I think this will show that Ukraine also has good prospects for joining NATO," he noted.
