Ukraine’s ministry of energy urges to deprive Russia of its IAEA member status

Russia should be deprived of the status of a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) due to the occupation of Zaporizhzhia NPP

The Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Halushchenko stated this on the air of the telethon, the press service of the Ministry of Energy reports.

"We are sure that Russia should be deprived of its membership in this organization," the minister said and emphasized that the occupation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP is a violation of nuclear safety rules and the basics of common sense.

Despite the fact that the USSR was one of the founders of the IAEA, and Russia became the legal successor of the Soviet Union, the role and place in this organization of a country that commits acts of nuclear terrorism must be reviewed, Halushchenko emphasized.

"The Russian war in Ukraine has changed everything that existed so far in the security systems, including in the nuclear industry. Under the current circumstances, we cannot be guided by old models, we must make new and quick decisions," said the head of the Ministry of Energy.

He emphasized how important the presence of IAEA representatives at the Zaporizhzhia NPP is.

"We can hardly expect that anything will change in Russia's attitude. But it is very important for us that IAEA representatives are on the territory of our nuclear facilities. I personally invited Mr. Grossi and his mission to Ukraine to all nuclear facilities for them to see what is happening, so that they see the Russian shelling and its consequences," Halushchenko said.

The minister noted that the occupied ZNPP is the biggest loss of the Ukrainian power system during the war, because there are 6 power units at the station, which back in February supplied the Ukrainian power system with more than 6,000 MW of electricity.
