Ukraine starts ringing home bodies of people killed in Russian attack on Olenivka
Ukraine has started to bring home the bodies of the dead Ukrainian servicemen from Olenivka, Donetsk region, who were killed in the terrorist attack by Russian forces.
Dmytro Lubinets, the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, shared the statement on Ukrainian TV channels, Ukrinform reports.
"I also requested that I be given the opportunity to visit our wounded heroes. And we started the procedure of returning the bodies of our fallen servicemen who were kept there," the ombudsman said.
Lubinets said that we are talking about a corresponding request regarding, including, the return of the bodies of the dead to the territory under the control of the Ukrainian authorities, so that relatives can receive them.
"We are currently conducting this procedure. We have officially launched this procedure," said the commissioner.
According to him, if we analyze this facility in Olenivka, there are violations of all Geneva Conventions.
"In particular, in principle, this institution cannot be designed for such a number of citizens - thousands of people were there. And we have repeatedly raised the issue before internationalists, before, first of all, the ICRC, so that they have access there and record violations of the conditions of detention, the number of people, etc.," he said
Lubinets believes that internationals should come there and take all materials for examination.
"Ukrainian experts will not do this, and in our opinion, it should not be done by experts of the Russian Federation - it should be done by international experts from various institutions around the world, so that the investigation of this crime is as objective as possible," he informed.
The official added that the testimony of the wounded Ukrainians will serve as additional evidence of what actually happened there - how the transfer process took place, what the soldiers were told, why they were being transferred, why exactly to this barrack.
"Especially because, as far as we know, there were no other positive changes in the conditions of detention - there was nothing like that. Therefore, there are many questions at the moment, but believe me, we are doing everything we can, what we have to do," Lubinets said.
According to the ombudsman, currently the representatives of Ukraine demand that while the Russians do not allow representatives of the Ukrainian state there, they should allow internationals there.
