Ukrainian refugees in U.S. mistakenly told to leave country within 7 days
Some Ukrainians in the U.S. under a humanitarian program received erroneous emails this week about the cancellation of their status
Reuters reported the information.
“If you do not depart the United States immediately you will be subject to potential law enforcement actions that will result in your removal from the United States,” the Thursday email read. “Again, DHS is terminating your parole. Do not attempt to remain in the United States.”
However, the very next day, on Friday, a DHS spokesperson stated that the email was sent by mistake, and the humanitarian program for Ukrainians — launched after Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022 — remains in effect.
Additionally, DHS later sent a follow-up message stating that the order was a mistake and that “the terms of your previously issued humanitarian status remain unchanged.” It is still unclear how many Ukrainians received the erroneous email.
- In early March, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he had not yet made a decision on revoking temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees in the U.S., noting that he does not want to harm anyone.
