Ukrainian Olha Kharlan wins gold at the Women's Sabre Fencing World Cup Stage in Lima, Peru
The National Olympic Committee of Ukraine press service reports.
"The individual championship at the Women's Sabre Fencing World Cup Stage in Lima concluded with a brilliant victory for Ukrainian Olha Kharlan. The gold, earned by our renowned sabre fencer in the capital of Peru, became her 14th top-tier award and 31st overall at competitions of such level," the statement reads.
Ranked sixth in the world, Kharlan was granted direct entry into the main draw.
Victory in the quarterfinals over the reigning world champion as part of the Hungarian team, Liza Pusztai (15:11), guaranteed Olha a medal. However, she did not stop there and went on to defeat American Elizabeth Tartakovsky (15:12).
The decisive fight, in which Kharlan faced off against Sugar Katinka Battai, was a rematch of last year's World Cup final in Athens. However, unlike March 2023, this time it concluded with a convincing victory for the representative of Ukraine (15:6), noted the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine.
