Ukraine expects to negotiate EU accession in less than 2 years - PM Shmyhal

Ukraine wants to go through the EU accession negotiations in less than two years. European partners are committed to productive cooperation in this regard

Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said this at a government meeting on January 13.

“We expect to go through the process of negotiations on joining the European Union in less than 2 years. And then Ukraine will become a full member of the EU,” he said and emphasized that the amount of preparatory work is enormous.

“At the same time, we see that our European partners are ready for productive cooperation in the issue of integration. A vivid evidence of this will be the visit of President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in the coming weeks. We expect that together with Ms. von der Leyen more than 10 European Commissioners will arrive in Ukraine to hold intergovernmental consultations,” Shmyhal added.

According to him, this will not only be an important signal of further support for Ukraine in the war, but will also demonstrate that the EU is open to the negotiation process on Ukraine's accession.
