Ukraine builds 11 underground schools in Sumy and border areas
Four underground schools are planned in Sumy city, bringing the total number in the region to eleven
Ukraine's government portal reported the information.
During a working trip to the Sumy region, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal visited a school in Sumy where an underground shelter is under construction. It’s designed to hold 500 people and will allow children to attend classes in person while staying safe.
According to Shmyhal, around UAH 117 million (nearly USD 2.9 million) has been allocated from the state and local budgets for this project. The underground school is expected to be ready by the start of the school year. At the moment, students are studying in a mixed format.
The Prime Minister said that a total of four underground schools are planned in Sumy, bringing the regional total to eleven.
"Safety in the education process is our top priority in this sector. We're steadily working to ensure as many children as possible can attend school in safe and comfortable conditions," Shmyhal said.
- Back on January 10, Shmyhal stressed the importance of building underground schools in front-line areas and said the government is allocating funds for them.
