
Ukraine appoints new chief to head General Staff
Andriy Hnativ, a seasoned military leader, takes over as Chief of Ukraine’s General Staff, bringing 27 years of experience in key defense operations
This was stated in presidential decrees No. 169/2025 and No. 170/2025.
"To dismiss Anatoliy Vladyslavovych Barhylevych from the position of Chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces," reads the first document.
The second decree appoints "Andriy Viktorovych Hnativ as the Chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces."
Who is Andriy Hnativ?
He has 27 years of military experience.
Although he graduated from the Kharkiv Institute of Tank Troops, he built his career in the Marine Corps, rising to the position of commander of the 36th Brigade.
In 2022, he led the defense of Mykolaiv and was responsible for the liberation of the Kherson region.
In the spring of 2023, Hnativ was appointed commander of the defense of Bakhmut. In April 2024, he became the commander of the troops of the Eastern Operational Command. He was promoted to major general in August 2024.
For several months, he served as the commander of the Joint Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
On February 27, Minister of Defense Rustem Umerov appointed Hnativ as Deputy Chief of the General Staff.
