"Not only among the right, which is represented by Netanyahu (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu - ed.), but also among the previous government, which consisted mainly of leftists. They also treated Ukraine, let's say, cautiously. They expressed words of support, but we did not receive military assistance even during their leadership. We see that Ukraine does not always consistently support Israel. When voting at the UN to declare the Israeli settlement of Judea and Samaria (Palestinian territory - ed.) illegal, Ukraine not only abstained but voted in favor of the resolution, and Israel did not like it very much. Therefore, Ukraine and Israel still have a long way to go to find some common ground," the historian believes.
The observer emphasized that in the current situation, Ukraine and Israel have become competitors, as it is about the allocation of funds from the United States of America.
"There was no synchronization. The Republicans support Israel more, the Democrats support Ukraine, and Biden tried to somehow align this to accept this aid as a single package, but for some reason it did not work. Now neither Ukraine nor Israel has received any money, and all hopes are only for December, when this issue will be raised again in Congress," explains Polishchuk.
According to him, the two countries are in the same boat.
"It is very complicated by the fact that Ukraine is now considered a project of the left among Western right-wing forces, so in countries where right-wing political forces, in particular Republicans, are in power, they look at Ukraine with a wary eye. That is why Ukraine needs to work in this direction, involving politicians of the old formation who are considered closer to the right-wing idea," he concluded.
