Trump assures he did not suggest Zelenskyy cede Donbas to Russia
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that during his meeting with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the issue of ceding Ukraine's Donbas to Russia was not discussed
He made this statement in comments to journalists aboard Air Force One, according to Rapid Response 47.
According to him, the issue of ceding territories was not discussed during the meeting. Instead, the talks focused on the idea of establishing a temporary ceasefire along the current front lines.
The U.S. president emphasized that such a topic had “never been discussed,” reiterating his belief that both sides should simply stop where they currently stand. He noted that there is now a front line, and “the rest is very tough to negotiate.”
In his view, the priority should be to achieve a ceasefire first, as the sides “could negotiate something later on down the line.”
When asked what, in his opinion, should happen to Donbas, he said that everything should be “left the way it is right now,” claiming that the region is currently divided and that about 78% of the territory is already occupied by Russia. He added that some form of agreement could be reached at a later stage.
"We think that what they should do is just stop at the lines where they are — the battle lines... go home, stop killing people, and be done," Trump emphasized.
