Top US officials to meet in Denmark with key countries that haven't condemned Russia's war on Ukraine
Senior US officials Jake Sullivan and Victoria Nuland will fly to Denmark this weekend at the Ukrainian government's request to meet with representatives of several key countries, including Brazil, India and South Africa, which haven't condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine
This is reported by The Financial Times.
According to people familiar with the plans, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has agreed to attend the meeting in Copenhagen with officials from countries such as India, Brazil, and South Africa. The list of participants is not yet finalized and may change before the meeting, one of the interlocutors warned.
Representatives of Turkey and possibly China may also attend the meeting.
One source familiar with the plans said that at Ukraine's request, Washington is encouraging China, India, Brazil, Turkey, and South Africa to attend the meeting.
Sullivan will be traveling with Victoria Nuland, the number-three official at the US State Department. A senior EU official will also attend the meeting. The White House declined to comment.
The planned meeting to expand the pro-Ukrainian coalition comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Ukraine's counteroffensive is “slower than we would like.”
Western officials are concerned that much of the world is not convinced of the need to support the Ukrainian resistance.
“We don't realize how much the rest of the world is not convinced. It's a terrible thing to admit,” the European official said.
Two people familiar with the plans said the officials would discuss peace principles for Ukraine in an informal setting. One of them emphasized that the meeting was not intended to achieve any specific outcome.
The meeting in Copenhagen comes after a three-day visit to Washington by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which he is expected to discuss Ukraine with US President Biden.
India, Brazil, China, and South Africa, which are members of the BRICS group along with Russia, have refused to join Western sanctions against Moscow, providing varying degrees of support to the Kremlin since it invaded Ukraine.

Also in August, the BRICS organization, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is to hold a summit, in effect those states that have not condemned Russia's actions in Ukraine. The meeting will be held in the South African capital. Putin's participation in the meeting is questionable, as an arrest warrant has been issued for him and South Africa is supposed to imprison him.
