"They can destroy squares, but not freedom": UK actor Hugh Bonneville makes video about Kharkiv under Russian guns

UK actor Hugh Bonneville took part in the Postcards from Ukraine project, talking about the sights of Kharkiv that have been shelled by invading Russian forces

The video was published on the YouTube page of the Ukrainian Institute.

"Kharkiv is the second largest city in Ukraine. Almost every building in its historical center is an architectural monument", Hugh Bonneville said.

In the video, the actor says that Freedom Square is one of the largest squares in the world, where the monuments of constructivism are located.

"The historical center has a great symbolic meaning for Kharkiv residents. From the first day of Russia's invasion, Kharkiv was one of the main targets of the Russian army. Not sparing either the historical heritage or the lives of civilians, the Russian army shelled the city every day. Administrative buildings, universities, churches, and libraries were destroyed. Dozens of people were injured and killed. Bomb blasts on Freedom Square and destroyed buildings throughout the historic center became a terrible reminder of the price of freedom in the 21st century", the actor said.

Hugh Bonneville added that the Russians will not be able to eliminate the freedom of Ukrainians: "You can destroy the squares, but you cannot destroy freedom".

The Ukrainian Institute reports that the Postcards from Ukraine project will present seven more videos in which artists from Ukraine and other European countries will tell the stories of destroyed historical and cultural buildings.
