The EU to 'filter' Russians, looking at everyone 'through a microscope': Klimkin on cancellation of EU's simplified visa regime with Russia
Ukraine's former Foreign Affairs Minister, Pavlo Klimkin, calls the suspension of the EU's simplified visa-free regime with Russia a belated but useful step
Klimkin wrote about this on Facebook.
According to him, the decision to stop the simplified visa regime between the EU and the Russian Federation seems late and weak, but it is a step forward.
"Now the European Union will literally 'filter' Russians who want to join the EU. More documents, more waiting, and most importantly - everyone will be looked at 'through a microscope'. Many countries are already doing this, but now it will be at the EU level", Klimkin wrote.
He added that in the EU, they say privately, but almost openly, that it is necessary to work with someone in 'future Russia'.
"Obviously, it's better to work in the EU, because Russia is now a dictatorship and a complete clean-up. I'm not sure that maintaining the issuance of visas to the EU will help, but the fact that they are starting to think about Russia 'after Putin' is a progress", Klimkin is convinced.
He also emphasized that the real horror for the Russian regime is that the decision on visas is made on the eve of autumn and winter.
"And in Russia, they expected to be afraid of them. The lack of fear of new and new sanctions is something that is now like a 'sword of Damocles' over Russia. The world is no longer afraid of it!", Klimkin stated.
