The 6th package of EU sanctions on Russia will not be agreed at the EU leaders' summit - von der Leyen
Head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen does not think that the sixth package of sanctions against Russia will be agreed at the EU summit on May 30-31
She stated this to journalists on the eve of the European Council summit, the Ukrainian online publication European Pravda (EP) reports.
According to her, the European Commission has prepared proposals to strengthen the EU's defense capabilities, reduce dependence on energy from Russia, financial assistance for Ukraine, as well as the EU's participation in postwar reconstruction.
"And, of course, there will be another topic that is still open - the sixth package of sanctions. We have already successfully adopted five sanctions packages. It has never been easy. With the sixth package - too," said von der Leyen.
She added that the European Commission and France, which holds the presidency of the EU Council, have worked to make progress on the sanctions package, but have not yet decided.
"I do not expect this to be resolved in the next 48 hours, but I am sure it will be possible later. My signal to EU members is clear: we have one key path to victory, and that is solidarity with Ukraine and the unity of the European Union", - the president of the EC emphasized.
Head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen spoke about the progress of the oil embargo on Russia with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó confirmed that negotiations with the European Commission on an embargo on Russian oil have progressed.
Szijjártó said that in order to give up oil from Russia, the country needs to invest 700-750 million euros. Later it became known that Hungary is asking the European Commission for compensation of 18 billion euros to support the oil embargo for Russia to cover all costs.
