Starting April 1, Russia will preside over UN Security Council: Kuleba calls it bad joke

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba expressed his indignation at Russia's presidency on Twitter.

"Russian UN Security Council presidency on April 1 is a bad joke. Russia has usurped its seat; it’s waging a colonial war; its leader is a war criminal wanted by the ICC for kidnapping children. The world can’t be a safe place with Russia at UNSC," he wrote.

The presidency of the UN Security Council changes every month. Each member state takes turns in the presidency. According to Article 24 of the UN Charter, the UN Security Council, as a permanent body, is responsible for the maintenance of international peace and security.

• This week, the UN Security Council is to discuss Russia's threats to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus.

• Earlier, Ukraine initiated the process of expelling Russia from the Security Council and the UN as a whole.
