Spain supports the initiative to try Russian President Vladimir Putin in The Hague for war crimes committed during the invasion of Ukraine

Euractiv writes about this with reference to Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albarez.

Spain will join the initiative to bring Russian President Vladimir Putin to the International Criminal Court in The Hague to hold him accountable for "war crimes" committed by Russian troops during the invasion of Ukraine.

The minister noted that Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine will not go unpunished for him. According to Jose Manuel Albarez, the goal of the Spanish government is to ensure peace on Ukrainian territory. Recently, Spain sent lethal weapons to Ukraine to repel an attack by the Russian Federation.

Earlier, the country's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that the country would increase its military budget to probably 2% of GDP according to NATO requirements in order to counter new challenges to Spain's security due to the Russian threat in Eastern Europe.

Pedro Sanchez said that Europe should pay attention to the events in Ukraine, while the EU and its NATO allies should improve their own defense capability.

"We must stop Vladimir Putin now, in Ukraine, because we do not know which country will be next",  the head of the Spanish Foreign Ministry emphasized.
