Spain agrees to train Ukrainian military to operate Leopards - media
Madrid has agreed to train the Ukrainian military to handle Leopard tanks. So far, 54 Ukrainians have been accepted for training
The Cadena SER radio network reports that Ukraine's Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov has asked Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles to train Ukrainian soldiers to drive Leopard tanks. After that, according to the radio network's sources, Madrid agreed to accept 54 Ukrainians for training.
The training for Ukrainians in Spain will last for two and a half months. Although for the moment, Spain has not specifically detailed how many tanks that it is going to send to Ukraine.
On January 26, Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles announced her readiness to supply tanks to Ukraine, but emphasized the need to re-equip them. According to media reports, there are 53 tanks at the base in Zaragoza.
On January 27, Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles said that the country had already agreed to send Leopard tanks to Ukraine in the spring. “The physical presence of the Leopards is not needed until spring, and we should use this time for training,” she said.
