"Slept less than four hours" - World Central Kitchen volunteers prepare 3 million meals for Ukrainian refugees
World Central Kitchen started in 2010 by Spanish chef José Andres. They partner with restaurants to provide more than 9 million meals to refugees every day.
Thehindu edition writes about it.
The culinary team has prepared more than 3,000,000 dishes for refugees from Ukraine.
One such chef is Noah Sims from the USA. He placed fourth in the 10th season of the MasterChef cooking competition. His team prepared more than 8,000 sandwiches a day for chicken stew and salad. The culinary first went to the border of Poland in March, later returned in April.
"What is happening in Ukraine, in my opinion, is unacceptable. I could not just sit back. So I decided to take the next flight to Poland, and my father wanted to join me," he says.
Sims' father, Richard, worked with the Medair charity. They help people affected by emergencies, natural disasters, displacement and conflict. Sims said the team cooked from 12 to 14 hours a day and stayed indoors to increase productivity.
"My dad followed me every step of the way, cooking borscht in vats, making thousands of pies, chicken, salads, rice and lots of potato dishes. We cooked in a well-stocked kitchen with 10-15 employees, and then the food was sent to World Central Kitchen for distribution," he said.
At first, food was packed in mixed boxes. Later, Ricardo, the owner of a food preparation restaurant, bought a food sealing machine, after which "we could pack 12 double servings into containers and put 32 sealed units into a box," said Sims.
Chefs and staff also traveled to border towns to distribute food packages.
"In Medica, we saw a group of three friends who were using a 1976 Polish army soup kitchen trailer. They cooked four types of soup all day," the chef added.
Sims also said that he bought and donated over a hundred hand warmers from the United States. They were given to children along with white teddy bears.
