Vondrášek said this at an emergency briefing.
According to the Czech police chief, the law enforcement operation is ongoing. In particular, they are inspecting the building of Charles University for possible explosives.
Vondrášek added that the police had information about the shooter, a 24-year-old man who left for Prague on Thursday morning from the village of Hostoun with the alleged intention of committing suicide. "A dead man was found in the village from which he left, it was the attacker's father," he said.
Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan, who also attended the briefing, called the tragedy in Prague unprecedented and one that "will have many consequences."
Earlier, the deadly incident was reported on the social media X.
As a result of the incident, nine people were seriously injured, five or six were moderately injured, and ten others were lightly injured. The rescuers warned that the information could still change.
The shooting took place on the territory of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University, located on Jan Palach Square in Prague. Eyewitnesses said they saw the shooter on the roof of the faculty building, and he allegedly fired at them. He was later eliminated. During the shooting, some people ran out of the building and into the street, while others hid on the roof of the building.
The spokesman for Ukraine’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, Oleh Nikolenko, said that the Foreign Ministry is monitoring the situation around the incident.
"There is no information about the injured Ukrainians yet. Ukrainian diplomats are in touch with Czech law enforcement," the spokesman said.
