"For the first time in the history of mankind, nuclear facilities have become an element of an offensive military strategy. Today, I heard from Director General Rafael Grossi assurances of full support from the IAEA for our efforts to ensure nuclear safety, including at Zaporizhzhia NPP," the prime minister said.
Denys Shmyhal emphasized that safety means the complete withdrawal of Russian troops and Rosatom personnel from the territory of the nuclear power plant, as well as its return to Ukrainian control. At the same time, Rafael Grossi said that the IAEA would never recognize Russia as the owner of the ZNPP.
Ukraine is convinced of the need to impose sanctions on Rosatom, restrict Russia's rights and privileges in the IAEA, and stop cooperation with a country that sponsors terrorism in the nuclear sphere.
"Rosatom's portfolio of foreign orders is worth $200 billion. I am sure that most of these funds, if received, will be used to finance the war, to finance missiles that kill civilian Ukrainians and expose the whole world to nuclear danger. That is why we will continue to insist on limiting Russia's rights and privileges in the IAEA and terminating cooperation with Russia in the nuclear sphere," Shmyhal said.
On January 18, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said that a permanent mission of the organization had arrived at the Chornobyl NPP.
On December 13, it was reported that the International Atomic Energy Agency was going to send permanent missions to all nuclear power plants in Ukraine in the near future.
On January 16, a monitoring mission of IAEA representatives arrived at the South Ukrainian NPP in the Mykolaiv region.
On January 18, it was reported that the agency's director general had opened a permanent mission at the Rivne NPP.
